民俗写真家 ・ 芳賀日出男(はがひでお)
1921年に大連に生まれる。慶應義塾大学で民俗学者の折口信夫に「人は心があれば儀礼という形にあらわれる」と教えられ、稲作儀礼を中心に日本人の生と死のリズムをテーマとして民俗写真を撮り始める。1989年紫綬褒章受賞。日本写真家協会名誉会員。

一粒の種から　愛知県大治町　1956年
稲の種籾(たねもみ)を手に握り、田の神に豊作を祈りながら水田にまく。握りしめた拳の間から種籾は水苗代にまかれ静かに沈んでいく。田の神に稲(いな)霊(だま)のよみがえりを祈る。

米は日本民族の２千年間の主食であった以上に、金銀の貨幣にまさる経済の基盤になっていた。農民は年貢のために稲作に精をだし、自らも強く生き、一家を支え、稲作中心の村社会を構成してきた。農家の人々が自分で生産した米を毎日食べられるようになったのは昭和17年（1942）に国が食糧管理法を施行してからである。
日本の稲は春の種まきから田植え、稲刈りを経て秋の終わりに米になる。種籾(たねもみ)が発芽することは人生の誕生にたとえられる。そして早苗になる。人生ならば子供の頃だ。苗代田から本田に移しかえられる。つまり田植えをする。この時、苗の古い根は枯れ、本田に活着する新しい根によって稲は生命力を更新させる。それは人の成人式で行われる新たな人生への通過儀礼と同じように見なされる。やがて穂ばらみ、結実をして、黄金色の稲穂となり、刈り取られて米となる。
　わが国の年中行事や郷土芸能は、稲に関係したものが一番多い。ひとつは我々が稲作中心の農耕民族であり、もうひとつは人の生涯を稲の１年間に集約して観る人生観があるのだ。稲は日本人にとって単なる栽培植物以上に稲(いな)霊(だま)の信仰を宿しているのである。
田の神への日本人の心を写真に撮る。私のライフテーマとなった。

Folk Photographer Hideo Haga

Born in Dairen in 1921. He was taught by folklorist Nobuo Orikuchi at Keio University that "if a person has a heart, it will be expressed in the form of rituals.” Hideo began taking folk photography of the rhythm of life and death of the Japanese people, focusing on rice farming rituals. In 1989 he Awarded a Medal with a Purple Ribbon. He is an honorary member of the Japan Professional Photographers Society.

Rice seeds are sown in the rice paddies while praying to the god of rice paddies for a good harvest. The rice seed is sown into the paddy field from between the clenched fists and quietly sinks into the water. Praying to the god of the rice paddy for the revival of the rice spirit.

Rice was not only the staple food of the Japanese people for 2,000 years, but also the foundation of their economy, surpassing gold and silver coinage. Farmers devoted themselves to rice cultivation to pay tribute, lived strong lives, supported their families, and constituted a village society centered on rice cultivation. It was not until 1942, when the government enacted the Food Control Law, that farmers were able to eat the rice they produced every day.
In Japan, rice is sown in the spring, planted, and harvested before becoming rice at the end of autumn. The germination of the seed rice is likened to the birth of life. The rice plant becomes an early seedling. If it were life, it would be childhood. The seedlings are transferred from the seedling chaff to the main field. Simply put, the rice is planted. At this time, the old roots of the seedlings die, and the new roots that are planted in the main field renew the vitality of the rice plant. This is viewed as a rite of passage into a new life, similar to the coming-of-age ceremony. Eventually, the ears of rice will break into bunches and bear fruit, producing golden ears of rice that will be harvested and grow into rice.
The largest number of annual events and local performing arts in Japan are related to rice. One reason is that we are an agrarian people mainly in rice cultivation, and the other is that we also view life as a year of rice cultivation. For the Japanese, rice is more than just a cultivated plant.
Photographing the Japanese spirit of the rice paddy gods has become my life's theme.
